Video Based Learning
Remote Filming
the challenge
This client valued film-based learning experiences, which provided the opportunity for learners to hear directly from the SMEs themselves. In 2020, during the covid-19 pandemic, we suddenly found ourselves unable to meet in person to film our learning content!
the approach
We got innovative with coaching the SMEs to set up their own lighting and cameras, and developed SOPs around remote filming. We used the SMEs webcams and — as a second camera — their smart phones, and combined the video footage to allow us to use multiple angles and jump cuts in the editing process.
the team
1 SME
1 film director / eduction director
1 film assistant and instructional designer (myself)
1 videographer
the learning solution
Producing the content using remote filming maintained our commitment to the client to keep the SMEs at the forefront of the training delivery and kept the content fresh and engaging for learners.
my role
My direct contributions to this project included storyboarding the video and drafting the script; working with the SME to coach them through filming; providing editorial decisions to the videographer in post-production; compiling the additional resources included in the course; authoring the course in Narrasys.
